Guide
Where to download software safely
The first rule is to download from the official site. Recommended sources without a download manager, and how to spot a risky download.
The first rule: download from the maker's official site. Many download sites add a "download manager" that installs software you did not ask for.
Recommended sources
- Ninite — install several programs at once, in the original version, with no extras.
- Microsoft Store and winget — built into Windows, and the download comes from the source.
- MajorGeeks — long-running and kept up to date. Watch out for advertisement buttons, and download from the regular link.
- PortableApps — portable programs that run without installation.
How to spot a risky download
- Fake Download buttons inside ads.
- A file that is too small, and is actually an installer rather than the program.
- An offer to install extra programs during setup — choose custom install and clear the checkboxes.
