Hebrew vowel points on a computer and in Word
How to turn on Hebrew nikud in Windows 10 and Windows 11, and how to add vowel points in Word without extra software.
Nikud on the Windows keyboard
On Windows 10 and Windows 11 the vowel points are already in the Hebrew keyboard layout. You do not need a special font for ordinary text.
- Switch to Hebrew with Alt+Shift, or Win+Space if that is how language switching is set.
- Hold Caps Lock and type the matching letter. On the standard layout, for example, kamatz sits on the letter pe when Caps Lock is on, patach on samekh, and hiriq on yod.
- If nothing happens, open Settings, Time & language, Language & region, Hebrew, Language options, and check that Hebrew (keyboard) is installed.
On a laptop without a separate key, Caps Lock is the switch. Turn it off when you go back to ordinary typing, or Latin letters will come out as capitals.
Nikud in Word
In Word for Microsoft 365, 2019, and 2021: place the cursor after the letter, open Insert, Symbol, More Symbols, and search for the vowel name. You can also leave Caps Lock on and use the keyboard, as in any other app.
A font with full Hebrew support (Arial, David, Calibri, Frank Ruehl) places the points in the right spot. A decorative font sometimes shifts them. If a point sits far from the letter, change the font before you look for a fault.
